Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego replied to the king, "O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to rescue us from your hand, O king. But even if he does not, we want you to know O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up." Daniel 3:16-18

I have always loved the passage above. As I've grown in my faith I've desired nothing more than to have the faith of these three men of God. You see Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego knew what was going on around them was not pleasing to God, and they refused to be a part of it. Every time I read, "But even if he does not," I am amazed at their faith. They knew that even if God did not save them from this fire that what He had in store for them was even better. Their dedication to God and love for him surpassed everything the world had to offer.

Our world today offers many different things to us and our children. Unfortunately, most of the things that are offered aren't pleasing to God. So the question is how do we have faith and strength to separate ourselves from the things of this world and teach our children to do the same?

I wish I had an easy answer for this question, but I'm not that good. It's difficult to live in the world but not become of the world, and that is made even more difficult when we don't spend the time we need to with God. We were created with a purpose, because our Creator wanted each of us. He desires us. Take this little piece of knowledge this month and let it fuel your passion and desire to live a transformed life that is separate from this world. Help your children do the same by spending time with them in prayer and reading Scripture together so that we are better able to discern what is pleasing to God. Maybe if we all stand strong and work on pleasing God together we will come out of the fire without smelling like smoke just like Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.
